How to properly store your outdoor nativity scene during the hot summer months
It’s heating up again and summer is right around the corner. Although this means it’s time to break out the ice cream cones and swim suits, let’s not forget about what this means for our beautiful Christmas decorations you purchased during the holidays. Whether you have a climate controlled storage space or just some room in your old shed in the backyard, you will want to follow a few steps to make sure your outdoor nativity scene is well protected from the elements.
First, make sure to clean off all any lingering dirt, grass, or junk that may have ended up on your nativity scene (don’t forget to clean the stakes and rope). This is best done when everything has been completely disassembled. Use an antibacterial wipe to kill off any potential mold or fungi. Do not use a hose or pressure washer.
Then, use a clean dry cloth to completely wipe down all sides of the nativity scene. Make sure not to use detergents, dishwashing products or cleaning products as many are harsh and can remove the protective coating.
Leave all the pieces out where they can air dry properly for a couple of hours.
Place the pieces back into its original box and secure each piece with twist ties or twine. Try to avoid using tape since it can melt in the heat. Make sure each piece is tied down in several different places so that the piece won’t slide out of place when you move the box.
Close the box and tape it shut with heavy duty packing tape.
Properly label the box on the top and two of the sides.
Place the box in the storage space away from anything combustible such as propane tanks or electronics. And away from windows or any other openings.
Make sure the box is either lying flat on the floor without anything stored on top of it or placed carefully on its side and make sure it is properly supported on all sides.
By following these simple steps, you can prolong the life of your outdoor nativity scene and enjoy it for many more holidays to come. Try looking at some of our other articles to see fresh new ways of setting up your nativity scene next Christmas.
